I purchased this camcorder to replace a mini dv camcorder that I have had for about 7yrs. It is a fantastic product, with excellent battery life and superb features. It is and excellent size which makes carrying it around a breeze. It is east to transfer the footage onto your PC for editing and then burning to a DVD. I would highly recommend this product. The price was by far the best that I could fine and Amazon’s usual excellent service made for a speedy delivery too.

Go on and buy yourself one and start making family memories!

Sorry, but this is well below the standard I expect from Sony. I have been using Sony mini DV cameras for 4 years, and on a recent shoot was able to make comparisons with their results and that of this HDD model. Frankly, this HDD model isn’t at all as good when it comes to video clarity. Also very unforgiving of lower light situations. The test of a product is would you buy it again. No. I’ll stick with my Sony mini DV cams, and firewire connections. Did I like anything about this model? The sound it records is impressive. But that’s not why we buy video cameras is it.

Good camcorder, terrible camera, 3 May 2010

I bought the DCR SR58 thinking it would both shoot video and take photos, thus removing the need to lug around a camcorder and a camera.

For video, it is certainly easy to use, with a great zoom and simple controls. It is compact in size and light to carry, which encourages you to use it. Another plus is compatibility with Apple imovie, so you can just connect to your mac for editing, without using Sony’s software.

The big downside, however, is the performance of the camera function. I printed out some photos and the quality was appalling. I checked the instruction manual only to discover that the camera is 0.3 megapixels! To my mind, this is not fit for purpose. Any camera-phone is better than that. I do not expect top notch quality – 5 meg would have been fine for occasional stills- but Sony have incorporated a joke camera into an otherwise good quality camcorder. Bizarre.
